Jonathan Brand: One Piece at a Time

Another intriguing part of our trip to Detroit came via a presentation from artist/incurable romantic Jonathan Brand. To pay for an engagement ring, he was forced to sell a 1969 Ford Mustang he had spent years restoring, but even marital bliss couldn’t wrench his thoughts away from the car he had loved and lost. So he set about recreating it in painstaking detail, using paper and a colour printer, working from the memories of his beloved vehicle. The results are staggering in terms of technical prowess, accuracy and the emotional pull of the final piece – the paper acting as a metaphor for the fragility of love for cars and/or people.

Joe Black and his Toy Soliders

Artist Joe Black uses anything small to create his large-scale mixed media pieces. For his latest piece, entitled “Made in China”, Black uses more than 5500 toy soldiers to create a portrait piece of a Chinese soldier boy taken by photographer Robert Capa (the image was used on the front cover of LIFE magazine, January 1938 to cover the Sino Japanese War).

Moby Dick typed on Toilet Paper

We continue today’s book theme: 4,7 rolls of toilet paper with Moby Dick written by typewriter:

The author says:

My friend and I once joked that toilet paper should have instructions printed on them for certain people. One day, the conversation grew from there and turned into a wager that I couldn’t (or wouldn’t) be able to type out a novel on toilet paper. Yes, we did have some time on our hands but, as you can see by the following photos, i won the bet.

There are four full rolls, one roll (epilogue) is about 1/5 of a roll and one half-roll. All of the rolls of tp came out of a brand new — clean — package of 2-ply cottonelle. They’ve been handled very gingerly and infrequently. As you’ll see in the following photos, one or two rolls have a tear at the beginning, this is where I was trying to pull the paper through the typewriter.

I’ve kept this mod oddity in a box in a cool, dry place for the last 10 years and have only broken it out to prove to doubters that I actually did it

The hell of war comes home. In July 2009 Colorado Springs Gazettea published a two-part series entitled “Casualties of War”. The articles focused on a single battalion based at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, who since returning from duty in Iraq had been involved in brawls, beatings, rapes, drunk driving, drug deals, domestic violence, shootings, stabbings, kidnapping and suicides. Returning soldiers were committing murder at a rate 20 times greater than other young American males. A seperate investiagtion into the high suicide rate among veterans published in the New York Times in October 2010 revealed that three times as many California veterans and active service members were dying soon after returning home than those being killed in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. We hear little about the personal hell soldiers live through after returning home.
